Frequently Asked Questions

What is Fly Screen?

A fly screen (also known as an insect screen or bug screen) is a mesh barrier installed over windows, doors, or vents to prevent insects like flies, mosquitoes, and wasps from entering your home — while still allowing fresh air and natural light to pass through.

Fly screens are especially popular in New Zealand homes, where ventilation is important but insects can be a nuisance, especially in warmer months.

At EcoScreen, our fly screens are designed to be durable, low-visibility, and custom-fit to suit all types of windows and doors.

What is the mesh made of?

EcoScreen offers a range of high-quality mesh materials to suit different needs and environments across New Zealand. Our most commonly used mesh types include:

  • Fibreglass mesh – Lightweight, flexible, and corrosion-resistant. Ideal for general household use, it allows excellent airflow and visibility.

  • Polyester mesh – Stronger than standard fibreglass and more resistant to stretching and tearing. It’s a great choice for families with pets or for areas needing extra durability.

  • Stainless steel mesh – The most durable and secure option. It’s corrosion-resistant and ideal for coastal environments or homes that want a higher level of protection.
Do you cover outside of Auckland?

Yes, we do! EcoScreen proudly serves customers in and around the Auckland region, including nearby towns such as Warkworth, Pukekohe, and Hamilton. A small additional petrol fee may apply for locations outside central Auckland.

We also have an exclusive EcoScreen dealer in Tauranga, offering professional installation and service in the Bay of Plenty region.

For customers outside our service zones, we offer a convenient DIY option with custom-made kits. These are easy to install and come with full instructions and support.

No matter where you are in New Zealand, we’ll help you find the right fly screen solution.

Can your screen block small insects?

Yes, they can. EcoScreen fly screens are designed to block even small insects like midges and sandflies — not just larger pests like flies or mosquitoes.

We use a 20×20 mesh weave, meaning there are 20 holes per inch both vertically and horizontally. This fine mesh effectively stops small bugs from entering your home while still allowing fresh air and natural light to pass through.

Our screens are ideal for New Zealand’s warmer months when tiny insects can become a real nuisance — especially in rural or coastal areas.

Can your screen fit onto timber framed joinery?

Yes, absolutely. EcoScreen fly screens can be installed on timber joinery as well as aluminium, steel, and even concrete-framed doors and windows.

We offer a range of custom fittings and mounting options to suit different materials and structures, and our team has extensive experience working with all types of New Zealand homes — including villas, bungalows, and modern builds.

No matter what your joinery is made of, we’ll provide a secure, professional installation that looks great and works flawlessly.

Do you charge for call-out fee?

In most cases, we don’t charge a call-out fee — especially if you’re located within Auckland or nearby suburbs.

For areas that are not too rural or remote, our team can usually visit without any additional charge. However, if the location requires extra travel time or fuel, a small call-out or petrol fee may apply. We’ll always let you know in advance before confirming your booking.

Feel free to contact us with your address, and we’ll be happy to let you know if any fee applies.

What is the warranty for your products?

We stand behind the quality of our products and workmanship. EcoScreen offers:

  • 5-year warranty on the screen frame

  • 3-year warranty on the mesh and workmanship

Our warranties cover manufacturing defects, material faults, and installation issues under normal residential use. If you ever experience a problem, just reach out — we’re here to help ensure your screens perform reliably for years to come.
